You can reach the small city Hachenburg in the Westerwald in about one hour by car. It’s really known for the “Schloss Hachenburg” (castle of Hachenburg) and the museums. The castle was built in 1180 a.chr. and was spared in the second worldwar. Also the garden of the castle, the old town, the old marked and the pedestrian zone is really great for walks. In the garden of the castle is a museum about agriculture in the 18. and 19. century and near the city you’ll find a great museum about old and new cadillacs fom the USA.

Höhr-Grenzhausen is the focus of the Kannenbäckerland (“can bakery country”) in the Westerwald. Earlier there were baked clay pots or jars of the clay of the region. For that the Westerwald was known nationwide. Because of this it is a great idea to visit the “Keramikmuseum Westerwald” (a museum of ceramics) or the “Burg Grenzau” (Grenzau castle). It’s a old ruine of a castle that is the only castle in germany that has a triangular castle keep.

Montabaur

Montabaur see below for image source   In twenty minutes by car you can reach the biggest city in the Westerwald – named Montabaur. Montabaur is really known for the yellow castle, that is already visble from the freeway. Also the ICE station is very practically for the city. It offers a really good access to Frankfurt am Main and Köln (Cologne). Behind Koblenz at the Mosel lays the popular wine village Winningen. The landscape is characterized of vineyards on the right and on the left side of the Mosel. Winningen is popular for their “Winninger Weinfest” (it’s a event from the winegrower). It’s the oldest event for wine in germany. The event is every year for ten days from the end of August to the beginning of September.

Eltz

The castle Eltz was built in the 12. century and is one of the most popular castles in germany, that wasnt not one time be conquered or devasted. A particular area of the castle can be visited daily from 1. April to 1. November. You can see a weapons collection of the 19. century, a salon and a bedchamber of the 16. century, a knights hall and a childs room. Also a collection of exhibits of the art history from the 12. to the 19. century can be visited in the vault.

The symbol of the little town at the Mosel is the Reichsburg, a castle in the new gothic style. With the cable railway (named Pinnerkreuzbahn) you can visit the viewpoint “Pinnerkreuz” that is in a hight of 255 meters. From the station you also can reach the funpark “Klotten”. Also interesting is the “Bundesbankbunker”, a bunker of the national bank where layed a currency for distress from 1964 to 1988. Now the bunker is owned by the Volksbank Cochem and sometimes you can visit it.

Loreley

The Loreley is a cliff near St. Goarshausen that has a hight of 132 meters. A legend says, that a mermaid named Loreley, sat on that cliff and sang for the seafarer. The seafarer were so amazed by the mermaid, so that they payed no attention to the currents and they went to ground with their ships. Now its a popular place for everyone, because the sight of the cliffs is spectacular. Also you can visit many concerts and events at the open air stage of the Loreley.

Braubach

The town at the Mittelrhein (middle Rhine) thats belonging to the UNESCO-Kulturerbe (UNESCO heritage), is known for the location below the Marksburg (castle). The Marksburg is the only castle that isnt destroyed at the Rhein. The small alley in the old town of Braubach are lined with old houses of the 16. to the 18. century. In the Marksburg you can visit a museum of the castle. There you can see the garden of castle, the cellar, the knights hall and the torture chamber.

Bendorf lays at the right side at the Rhein between Koblenz and Neuwied. Definitely worth seeing is the “Schloss Sayn” (the castle of Sayn) in a new-gothic style and the “Rheinische Eisenkunstguss Museum”. It tells the story of mining in Bendorf. If you’re searching fun for the whole family try the “Schmetterlingsgarten Sayn”. It’s a small “zoo” for butterflys from allover the world. For more sporting activity there is a climbing forest for small and tall.

Andernach

Andernach is one of the oldest citys in germany. It’s about quarter of an hour by car to drive from Koblenz to Andernach. The biggest attraction of the city is the “Andernacher Geysir”. This geyser is with 50 to 60 meters the highest cold water geyser at the world. At the Rhein plants you can walk a nice route and if you get hungry just eat the tasty fruits you can find in the whole city. Like other citys in germany, Andernach is an “eatable city”. It means they plant fruits and vegetables all over the town and the people just can eat it. This project is meant to direct attention to reagional and saisonal food.
